A Flying Saucer and a clothing line

3 05 2008

I have always been a keen follower of fashion – I mean, come on, look at me.

It dates back to my younger days when I was out and about courting Mrs Belm (now my wife) and we were hob-knobbling with the fashion aficionados of the age.

At the time my girlfriend, now my wife (Mrs Belm) was one of the world’s leading elblow models.

Here she is in her pomp and her prime-time modelling days:

From those giddy, globe-trotting, elbow modelling days, we have often spoken of starting our own clothing range.

We actually factually even got to the point of a few designs and a name – the House of Belm.

My two daughter childs – Fennell and Basilette – are both keen on clothes, they wear them most of the time. So there was talk of starting a sister business to Derek Belm & Sons (model-maker to the stars, minor royalty and ordinary folk) and have the two daughter childs working in the House of Belm designing and selling clothes and stuff.

Alas it never got off of the ground or anything as the daughter childs went off on their own career-type paths.

Fennell became an anthropologist and has spent the last few years touring the world’s beach resorts studying young surf dudes in great detail. Basilette does something different.

But now my interest in fashion has been repricked thanks to a Flying Saucer.

The delightful young bloggette behind this site also writes for The Birmingham Post - my fifth favourite newspaper behind our local publication The Shouty Villager; the Model-Makers’ Gazetteer and Puzzle Book; The Hints Bugler; and The Sunday Sport.

Her delightful enthusiasm is infectious and I’m now resolved to investigate whether I should reincarnate the House of Belm concept and launch a clothing line (an actual factual range of clothing, rather than something for drying garments upon).

Some of our original designs are still relevant to this day, I believe, and I’ve managed to dig out some of the pre-publicity shots we took of the prototype clothing:

We could be on to something big here, I’m sure you’ll agree.

I’ve instructed the firm of designers we use to produce leaflets and stuff for Derek Belm & Sons to start working on some ideas for a House of Belm logo and brand identity and everything.

Of course, it might all come to nothing.

But inspired by Ms Flying Saucer and her fashionable scribblings, I think the House of Belm might be able to capitalise on the growing interest in clothes that people appear to have these days.
